P01: WAGNER, Gerhart, Coordinator (Uppsala, SWEDEN) Uppsala University, Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM)
Dr. Gerhart Wagner is professor of microbiology, and group leader at ICM. GW obtained his PhD in 1981, spent a postdoc period in Seattle, and established an independent research group in the mid-80's. He competed successfully for a full professorship at SLU (Swedish university of agricultural sciences, 1995), and obtained his present position at ICM/ Uppsala University in 2000. He has ≈20 years of experience in RNA biology, antisense RNA, plasmid copy number control, and RNA structure and interaction kinetics. Other, minor lines of study involve antagonistic interactions between bacteria and fungi or beneficial interactions between bacteria and plants.
The Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) is a department at Uppsala university, located at the Uppsala Biomedical Center (BMC). BMC houses ≈1500 scientists/scientific personnel covering subject areas from biology, chemistry, pharmaceutical and medical sciences. ICM consists of a merger of 7 former departments (total ≈170 persons). This department is well-equipped for essentially all modern chemistry and molecular biology applications. All instruments and infrastructure necessary to carry out the proposed project are available, either within the partner group, or within the neighbouring groups belonging to ICM. In addition, access to core facilities is available due to an involvement in a national collaboration on functional genomics (microarrays, proteomics platform).
